about

The second our series of album-length mixtapes. This volume compiles live recordings, voice notes, and cassette tape experiments.

Included in the 18 tracks are never before recorded folk songs (‘The Bounty’), a session with the legendary Mike Gangloff - of Pelt, Black Twig Pickers et al. (‘Pretty Little Cat’), live cassette documents of barely-tunes (‘Foxhunter’s Reel’), songs in-learning (‘Claudy Banks’), ghostly imprints of space and time (‘The Mountain Streams where the Moorcocks Crow’ & ‘Joe Bane’s’) and even snippets of our joking conversations whilst we were on tour. All this and pretty much everything in between is included, everything except the very finely polished.

This goes some way to demonstrating our attempt to capture the spirit of 'unfinished' musical moments. An experiment in how to sonically ‘show your working’. We really hope you enjoy this strange little volume x

Shovel Dance Collective London, UK

United by a passion for the traditional music of the British Isles, Ireland and beyond we are committed to folk music not as an artifact to be unearthed, but as a communal activity - inviting to those it speaks to. A kind of musique boue, a patchwork stitched together and rearranged, holding the voices of the oppressed and those who, by their labour, create the wealth of the world. ... more
